Karan Johar's WE ARE FAMILY - : A touching family entertainer

Since most of the world and its mother has watched Stepmom we won’t go into the story of We Are Family. The film totally scores on its emotional narrative, speckled with smile-inducing, heart tugging scenes that make you choke with laughter while wiping away the tears from your cheeks. The movie is distinctly Dharma and Karan Johar in the sense that it’s not afraid to show its emotions. This is not a film that shies away high drama. And ultimately a film about bonding trust and life it has you smiling at the right times and sniffing away tearfully at other times.

Now for the performances. As the younger woman who struggles to bond with her boyfriends kids and ex wife Kareena is superlative. She looks stunning and lends the role her characteristic effortlessness. Arjun Rampal is fabulous as the dad and husband caught in the crossfire. It seems that this is a good year for Arjun where he can do no wrong. The kids Aanchal Munjal, Nominath Jinsberg and Diya Sonecha are adorable and well cast and unlike children in most Indian films you actually want to hug them and not send them to bed without dinner. But the film belongs to Kajol who amazes you with her nuanced performance. She is dark and light, hard yet vulnerable and she totally wins you over in the role of a cancer stricken mother who must choose the best for her children.

WAF is designed to be a family entertainer and that it definitely is. If you must compare it to its original then you could point out that WAF lacks the conflict between the two women that was the fulcrum of Stepmom. This is an out and out Indian film at heart where everyone does the right thing when it comes to family and Indian values and pretty much nothing is left to your imagination. The dialogue by Niranjan Iyengar is thankfully original except in some scenes. But then you must remember this is a remake and there is not turning away from that. You can put your money where your heart is with WAF. And yes don’t forget to carry tissues. Infact take the whole box with you.

Thought for the Day - 18th August 2010

If you condemn yourself, day and night as petty and weak, you can never accomplish anything. If you think that you are luckless and low, thereby you become luckless and low. Instead, when you cultivate the awareness that you are a spark of God; that you have as your reality Divinity Itself, then you can really become Divine, and you can have command over all powers. "Yad Bhaavam, Thad Bhavathi" (As you feel, so you become). It is how you feel that matters the most. That is the basis for all that you are. Have faith in the Atma, the Divine Self that you really are! This is a must for every one of you!

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (July 30, 2010)

Once Upon A Time In Mumbai is seen through the eyes of a police officer. It traces the changing face of the Mumbai underworld and how it all started. The film, set primarily in 1970s Mumbai, follows the rise of Sultan (Ajay Devgn), and the conflict, when his prot?g? Shoaib (Emraan Hashmi), challenges his supremacy, and usurps power to rule the murky underbelly of Mumbai. The film is presented in a retro chic style and is a glamorous and powerful rewind to the golden era.

Khatta Meetha (2010)

Struggling road construction contractor, Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) is doomed to dream big. There is no chance in hell that his dreams will ever come true, simply because he has no money to bribe! To make matters worse, the new municipal commissioner turns out to be his ex girlfriend (Trisha) who now hates him. Even as you laugh as Sachin bumbles his way from one disaster to another, the film reveals in a light hearted way, the extent of corruption and bribery rampant in the system. And the ingenious means you have to adopt if you want to survive. Enjoy the bumpy ride!

On the whole, KHATTA MEETHA is a major letdown from the accomplished director. It's not a full-blown comedy. It's not a full-scale satire either. Hugely disappointing!

Thought for the Day - 24th July 2010

Today people have lost the precious virtue of fear of sin. It is only lack of fear of sin that is responsible for the present plight of the society. Today people are committing several sins with the belief that God is kind and will ultimately forgive their sins. With this belief, they are indulging in more and more sinful acts. They have developed a sort of complacency and think that they can escape punishment. But the fact is otherwise. Though God is compassionate and may forgive all sinful acts, every human being has to necessarily pay for his/her sins. For morality to exist in society, fear of sin is essential. Hence everyone must develop the three qualities of: love for God, fear of sin and morality in society.

Thought for the Day - 23rd July 2010

You must learn how to make your parents happy. Today, parents are being treated like servants. Some parents are being admitted into old age homes, when there is shortage of money. This is not correct. It is your responsibility to look after your parents and provide necessary support to them. They should not be sent to old age homes. You must keep them with you and serve them. You need not prepare special items for their sake. It is enough if you can give them what you are eating. Whatever job you take up, you must always serve your parents and make them happy. Serving your parents must be the greatest fortune you must aspire for. It is enough if you take care of your parents, your children and your family. That is the hallmark of real education- Baba

Lagenda Budak Setan (2010) - Movie

"Lagenda Budak Setan" (LBS) has been reprinted several times since the 1980s making it a best seller of all time. Ahadiat Akashah's novel has been adapted into a tragic love film. The film revolves around Kasyah (Farid Kamil) known as 'Budak Setan' among his university classmates because he is badly behaved. All this changed when Kasyah meets a beautiful girl named Ayu (Lisa Surihani). Their relationship started to evolve when Kasyah decided to conduct some research in a rural village. After he left, Ayu was forced into marriage with her ex boyfriend Azmi (Que Haidar), a womanizer and drunkard

Director Sharad Sharan ("Diva", "Tipu Kanan Tipu Kiri") uses Indonesia's Windra Beyamin and Gio's composition in the film. The song "Bila Cinta" is played several times, yet still sounds fresh every time and complements the emotional scenes well.

In the reviewer's opinion, Malaysia should be proud with the production of "LBS". With solid performances and a clear-cut storyline, "LBS" should be well received in the cinemas especially by the fans of the novel that has been anticipating the release of the film.

Thought for the Day - 9th April 2010

Nature is resplendent with many colors. When you wear blue colored glasses you only see the color you have worn, isn't it? If the world appears to you as filled with differences, it is entirely due to your fault. If all appear as one, that too, is due to your love only. For both of these, the feeling in you is the cause. It is only because one has faults within oneself, one sees the world as faulty. The Lord always looks for goodness, not for faults and sins. He only sees the righteousness! Develop goodness and righteousness. Live and act in joy and love. These two are sufficient to attain salvation.

Thought for the Day - 27th March 2010

Desires breed wishes. Wishes cause birth and also death. If you are devoid of desires, you need not go through birth and death. The next birth is the result of unfulfilled desires in this life and is determined by them. However, the desire to know God, to love God and be loved by God is a desire that does not bind. When awareness of God dawns in all its splendor, every worldly, sensual desire is reduced to ashes. The individual Self will then turn towards Universal Self and delight itself in supreme everlasting peace.
